Caherhurley Nursery is a small family business with a mission. It's a nursery of ornamental garden plants in Co.Clare, dedicated to growing a wide range of unusual herbaceous perennial plants and small shubs with a subtle natural beauty; plants that thrive in the challenging Irish climate. We're helping gardeners, who visit our nursery from all over Ireland, in their journey to create something wonderful. Caherhurley is a no-nonsense nursery, providing free expert advice on choosing the right plants on the day they're in the nursery to purchase their plants. Caherhurley plants are affordable for everyone. All our plants are grown in 1 litre or 0.5 litre round pots. Plants grown in this size pots have proved to settle far better in the garden, than plants grown in larger pots.

ABOUT US:
Caherhurley Nursery is owned and run by us, Gert and Elisabeth Stam. We moved with our family from the Netherlands to Ireland in 2001.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS:
The 12 months from August 2025 to August 2026 have been a turbulent time for Caherhurley Nursery because of my health issues (Gert, I'm the grower). Caherhurley Nursery's future was uncertain in that time. With the support of our loyal visiting customers and young trainees, students and volunteers we managed to get Caherhurley Nursery back on its feet again. My medical issues are sorted and I can work again, although there's a limit to what I can do. In a joint giant effort of everyone here, Caherhurley Nursery was transformed into a unique place where gardeners love to come.

OUR PHILOSY
At Caherhurley Nursery, we believe that plants should be grown in ways that complement both the Irish climate and the conditions that are commonly found in Irish gardens.
Our philosophy can be described with four statements:
1. We only select the hardiest plants to grow at our nursery. We find that many plant varieties available in Ireland are just unsuitable for our climate; some are vulnerable to frost, but winter dampness can also cause trouble. Then there is the problem of plants that look good when purchased, but perform poorly. Many varieties do not flower as abundantly as they would in other, less hostile parts of Europe. We decided to do something about this by offering varieties that can cope with the more challenging Irish climate.
2. By growing our plants in the harsh conditions of our windy mountain slope, without any protection from glasshouses or polytunnels, we give them a far better chance to survive the challenging circumstances anywhere. They are much better adapted to the extremes of the Irish climate than the few-months-hardened-off polytunnel-grown plants out of the modern fast-crop mass-production nurseries which have been ‘hardened off’ only briefly.
3. Our plants are grown to certified organic standards (IOA licence 4308) without chemicals or artificial fertilisers. They are grown slowly into compact, strong, fresh and healthy looking plants, waiting to burst out into something wonderful in your garden. Since our plants are certified organic, they do not contain any chemicals that kill bees, insects and other wildlife. In fact, certified organic is the only guarantee that you will not bring harmful chemicals into your garden. By purchasing our plants, you will make a positive contribution to the environment.
4. We cultivate plants that differ from those commonly grown in Irish gardens. We predominantly grow plants that have a natural appearance. We value plants that display true beauty. We find that some newly-introduced plants fall short of the expectations promised by their developers, and that our favoured, less common varieties perform better.

A visit to Caherhurley Nursery is considered by gardeners in Ireland as a unique experience. All visitors are welcome, feel free to browse around, and don't feel obliged to buy anything. Our mission is to show what's possible. Most first time visitors are amazed by what they discover. For a long time Caherhurley Nursery was one of Ireland's best kept secret, a hidden gem.
How we can help:
1. We offer our services on the nursery during your visit. We can help you there and then.
2. The area of our nursery is layed out in a way you can find the plants yourself, the plants you need for your purpose.
3. With the choice of plants we grow it's easy to create a natural atmosphere in your garden. The range of Caherhurley plants is different from anything else.
4. When you need advice or suggestions, we're there to help you.
5. If you need our help gathering plants for a large project, a new garden, a bed or a border of a significant size in your garden, ring us in advance on 087 9062987 to book a time slot for a visit, to be sure one of us has enough time to help you here.
6. Almost all Caherhurley Nursery plants are only €6 each. You can avail of our special deal: any 9 plants for €50.
7. All our plants are available to purchase for visitors to our nursery. We can't offer a service of delivery by couriers. But you can ask friends visiting our nursery to pick up pre-ordered plants for you at our nursery. See the option mentioned here below.
8. If you have limited time for your visit, or you want a friend to pick up plants for you, and you want certain varieties of plants listed on our website, we're happy to gather them for you to collect them here at the nursery. We will accept orders of a minimum of 18 plants. This way you can avail of our special deal mentioned above: any 9 plants for €50. Just email your order a day in advance to stamireland@gmail.com.
9. For those of you who cannot travel to our nursery, or doesn't have anyone to pick up plant at our nursery, we can bring pre-ordered plants for you to pick up at a plant fair near you. We will accept orders of a minimum of 18 plants. This way you can avail of our special deal mentioned above: any 9 plants for €50. Just email your order a day in advance to stamireland@gmail.com.
