Meet Gert and Elisabeth

We are Gert and Elisabeth Stam and are both qualified horticulturalists and have twenty-five years of experience in gardening and growing plants in The Netherlands and twenty years in Ireland.

Our nursery is part of our farm situated in the foothills of Slieve Berneagh in East Clare. We settled here twenty years ago after a busy life in The Netherlands, where we had a specialist nursery and gardens open to the public. As our village in The Netherlands became more urbanised, we decided to sell our nursery and move to Ireland. We were attracted by the beautiful Irish scenery and the hospitality of the Irish people. We are also pleased that our unconventional ideas about plants are very well received here in Ireland.

We believe in the small-scale production of plants. Caherhurley Nursery is a small family-run enterprise, where we work with great passion for plants.

We are not in this business for money, but because we want to share our passion for great plants with Ireland's gardeners. After five years of dealing with his medical issues, Grower Gert survived and wanted to do something useful for the gardening community in Ireland. He found that he was still capable of some physical work; after all there is no stopping an old grower. Gert continues to do what drives him with passion: offering a wider range of better plants for the Irish climate. Gert envisioned a nursery that specialised in growing a wide range of unusual quality ornamental plants that are hard to find elsewhere, and where garden lovers from all over Ireland could come to visit. He is humbled that his dream has come true. Last year for the first time Caherhurley Nursery was honoured by a visit of a large number of Ireland's gardeners.
