Geum rivale, known in Irish as Machall uisce and commonly called Water Avens, is a charming native wildflower found across Ireland. It is a moisture-loving perennial that thrives in damp meadows, riverbanks, and marshy grasslands

The flowers have distinctive nodding, bell-shaped blooms with dusky pink or pale coral petals and deep purple-red sepals. They typically appear from May to September.

Geum rivale (Water Avens) thrives in moist, sunny-to-part-shade environments, making it ideal for bog gardens, pond edges, and damp borders. Top companion plants include moisture-loving perennials like Trollius (Globeflower), ferns, Tiarella (Foamflower), Hosta, and Astilbe. It pairs well with other damp-soil lovers like Persicaria and Iris sibirica.
