Althaea officinalis

€6.00

Marshmallow is an introduced, but naturalised Irish wildflower also known as Leamhach. It grows up to 180cm tall with cup-like pale-pink flowers from June to October. The flowers are held in groups of 3 on the tall stems from June to October. The slightly folded, grey-green leaves are held on slightly downy stems.

Originally introduced as a medicinal plant. Rare and decreasing, but still recorded from coastal southern and western Ireland.

Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow) thrives alongside moisture-loving perennials and herbs that offer pest protection, such as comfrey, yarrow, and marigolds. Best planted in full sun with consistent moisture, it pairs well with species that thrive in damp soil and attract pollinators, including bees, while acting as a trap crop for pests.

Marshmallow likes a moist, well-drained soil in sun.
