Ajuga reptans

€6.00

A native Irish perennial, Bugle or Glasair choille is usually seen growing in broadleaved woods or in damp grassland. A creeping perennial up to 15cm tall with glossy leaves which sometimes have a bronze tinge. The blue flowers are held in upright spikes from May to June

Ajuga reptans (Bugleweed) is a highly beneficial, nectar-rich, evergreen ground cover that acts as a vital early-season food source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its dense, mat-forming flowerspikes are particularly favoured by pollinators.

Its dark green year-round foliage can be useful to suppress weeds under trees and shrubs, as it gradually spreads and covers exposed areas. It prefers shaded areas, and can be used to cover banks, shaded corners and other difficult planting areas.

Some shade loving companion plants would be;  Pulmonaria (Lungwort), Lamium (Deadnettle), another shade-tolerant, spreading ground cover. It thrives alongside early spring bulbs and ground cover for underneath shrubs.

It acts as an effective, low-maintenance, weed-suppressing border edging.

A great groundcover or damp rockery plant which likes moist soil in sun or partial shade.
